Sample longer blurb to plug the book:

I’m excited to share that my friend Jenny Blake’s book just launched, Pivot: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One, a step-by-step method to map what's next. This book is perfect for anyone searching for an answer to "What's next,” whether self-employed, working within a company, or pivoting a project or side-hustle. She unpacks how to pivot successfully through her four-stage Pivot Method, a strengths-based approach that emphasizes doubling down on what is already working to shift into a new, related direction. As Jenny says, "If change is the only constant, let's get better at it."

Book Description

If you’ve got the perfect job or business, congratulations.

But if you are even a little bit uncertain that your current gig is the right fit, it is time to start thinking about your next move. In the new world of work, it’s the only move that matters.

What’s next? is a question we all have to ask and answer more frequently in an economy where the average job tenure is only four years, roles change constantly even within that time, and smart motivated people find themselves hitting natural professional plateaus. But how do you evaluate options and move forward without getting stuck? Jenny Blake’s solution: it’s about small steps, not big leaps, and the answer is already right under your feet.

When you pivot, you double-down on your existing strengths and interests, instead of looking so far outside of yourself for answers that you skip over your hard-won expertise and experience. Pivot is the new Plan A; it is the crucial skill you need to stay agile, whether or not you are actively looking for a new position. Pivoting empowers you to navigate changes with flexibility and strength—now and throughout your entire career.

No matter your age, life stage, industry, or bank account balance, Blake’s advice will help you move forward in a methodical way. Drawing from her own experience and those of other successful pivoters, she shares her four-stage Pivot Method that will teach you how to seamlessly and continually:

  • Double down on existing strengths, interests, and experiences. Identify what is working best and where you want to end up, then start to bridge the gap between the two points.

  • Scan for opportunities and identify new skills without falling prey to analysis-paralysis or compare-and-despair. Explore options by leveraging the network you already have.

  • Run small experiments to determine next steps. Do side projects to test ideas for your next move, taking the pressure off having the entire answer up front.

  • Take smart risks to launch with confidence in a new direction. Set benchmarks to decide when the time is right to go all-in on your new direction.

You will meet pivoters like Amy, who took on a task no one at her company wanted—learning about social media—and parlayed that into a VP position directing social media outreach. Like Adam, who transitioned from creative director of a real estate company to design business school, before founding his own brand strategy company. And like Jenny herself, who left her job running career development programs at Google to start a related business based on her blog and first book.

Pivot also includes valuable insight for leaders who want to have clearer and more frequent career conversations to help talented people pivot within their roles and the broader organization, rather than looking for outside work.

No matter your current position, one thing is clear: your career success and satisfaction depends on your ability to determine your next best move.  If change is the only constant, let’s get better at it.

Author bio: Jenny Blake is a career and business strategist, international speaker, and author who helps people organize their brain, move beyond burnout, and build sustainable, dynamic careers they love. She pivoted from studying political science, communications, and computer science at UCLA to becoming the first employee at a political polling start-up in Silicon Valley. She then moved to Google, where she spent over five years in Training and Career Development as the company skyrocketed from 6,000 to 36,000 employees, while also writing her first book, Life After College. Jenny left Google in 2011 to take her consulting business full-time. She’s a San Francisco native now living in New York City.

MISCELLANEUM

Pivot book publishing timeline:

  • I started thinking about the book in January 2013

  • I submitted the first proposal, for a book called The Pivot Year, to my literary agent later that summer. She gave me some tough-love feedback . . . I didn't submit another proposal to her until the following Spring.

  • I got the book deal from Portfolio/Penguin Random House on my birthday, October 9, 2014.

  • I spent a year-and-a-half deep in the writing, editing and revising process with my editor Natalie

  • Pivot was originally going to come out March 8, 2016. When I first heard we weren't going to hit that deadline and needed to post-pone until September, I cried. Then I realized it was asking me to live the message of my book: a pivot for Pivot! It was the best thing that could have happened to me, and the project.

  • We finished the book and sent it off for galley printing in March 2015!

My Work History:

  • I have been living the solopreneur life since March 2011, running my speaking, coaching and consulting business in New York City

  • I worked at Google for 5+ years in Training, Coaching and Career Development

  • Prior to Google I worked at a start-up company that did online political polling. I took a leave of absence from UCLA to work their as their first employee.

  • I graduated from UCLA in three years with a double-major (Comm and Poli Sci), College Honors, Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa

  • I am a certified life coach (CPCC) trained by CTI (2008) and a certified yoga teacher (trained at White Lotus, 2010)

Fun Jenny Facts:

  • I have lived in New York City since September 2011. My friend Julie and I refer to it as "The Yellow Brick Road." Here's a post I wrote on my experience called Day in the Life.

  • Every summer I host potluck picnics in the park for authors and entrepreneurs

  • I love walk-and-talks, yoga, pilates, and doing handstands in the park

  • I pretend I'm starring in a movie every time I walk down the street

  • I drink tea out of "manifestation mugs" - mugs I have picked up on my travels from places like Mexico, Bali, Dublin, and the UN. I envision myself back in that location (or doing that type of work) when I sip my morning beverage.

  • I meditate daily and credit it with re-wiring my brain (particularly during and after my "apocalypse" pivot year in 2013).
